TALES AT THE DORMER HOUSE
Thursdays at 4:00 p.m. from June 4 – October 15 at 800 Columbia Ave., Cape May Except on July 2
Enjoy classic American stories and plays read by a variety of performers, along with lemonade and homemade treats.
$12, cash or check at the door; Guests of The Dormer House and ages 12 and under are free.
Performances are on the porch, weather permitting. BUT we go inside if we can't be outside!

September 10: Phil Pizzi reads Personal Experiences During the Chicago Fire (1871) by Frank J. Loesch, a harrowing account
of one of the worst disasters in this country. No, the cow did not start the fire.
September 17: Stephanie Garrett presents Chester Himes' "Headwaiter" and "Lunching at the Ritzmore," satirical looks at
how Black people were treated in restaurants in the 1940's.
September 24: Eileen Kirk reads selections from Anita Loos's Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1925) which Loos adapted
for the 1949 Broadway musical, which was then adapted into the 1953 film.
October 1: Frank Smith reads Damon Runyon's "Madame La Gimp" (1929) about how a woman who sells fruit on New York City sidewalks, becomes a socialite for one day. Frank Capra turned this tale into two films: Lady for a Day and Pocketful of Miracles.
October 8: Gayle Stahlhuth presents Mildred Clingerman's "Minister Without Portfolio" (1952), a lovely
science fiction story about the power of everyday conversation with strangers.
October 15: Frank Smith, Stephanie Garrett, and Gayle Stahlhuth, as usual, each present one of their favorites,
since it's the final "Tales at the Dormer House" for 2026

MARGARET'S DIARY DURING A REVOLUTION
Saturday, September 5 at 2:00 p.m. at The Grange at Historic Cold Spring Village, 735 Seashore Road, Cape May, NJ
Admission Fee for entrance into Historic Cold Spring Village admits guests to see Margaret and other events for free
Written and performed by Gayle Stahlhuth based on the diary of Margaret Morris and other research
Created to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution.
The performance is set in 1795 and Margaret Morris, in proper attire, is visiting a location to read sections from her diary and add what she later learned about events leading up to and after The Battle of Trenton while living in Burlington, NJ next to the Delaware River. Beginning her detailed entries on December 6, 1776, her writing is accessible for the modern ear and not without humor as Hessian invasions were imminent, and the Pennsylvania Navy. and the Pennsylvania and New Jersey militias patrolled the river, preparing for war to come to Philadelphia. Many of her neighbors fled Burlington, while Margaret remained.

October 12 - 29: Rob LeMaire and Gayle Stahlhuth are teaching students in a public school in Ocean City, NJ a bit about theater
and working with them to bring these timeless fables to life. (CAT procured funding so that neither the school nor the town is paying for this in-school residency.)

Calamity Jane's Diary is brought to life by writer and performer Gayle Stahlhuth, who studied the diary and the events surrounding it. That there was a Martha Jane Canary (1852-1903), also known as Calamity Jane, there is no doubt. But was she
a scout for the army? Did she marry and have children? Was she a performer in Buffalo Bill Cody's Wild West Show? When
Jane's diary surfaced in 1941, it was proudly displayed at The Western Trails Museum in Billings, Montana.
But is it an accurate description of Jane, or shrouded in myths?
