"It had been a while since I’d tried my hand at playwriting, but Gayle’s genuine delight in exploring language and ideas gave me courage and confidence.” - Linda from Suffern, NY
"Thank you so much for the fun and delightful actor's workshop held at End Of The Road Theater. My husband and I really enjoyed it. We hope that you will continue to offer these in the future and would love to hear of any upcoming events. Looking forward to "CAT" and your vision for bringing it to Cape May!" - Fran from Cape May
PLAYWRITING
Writing a play is just one way to tell a story. By exploring characters, relationships, and situations, a story is born, but through a play, the action is driven by dialogue – not only “what” is said, but “how” it’s said. Professional playwright Gayle Stahlhuth guides participants in getting dialogue going through thinking of different times, locations, characters, events, and simple writing exercises to trigger the imagination. The workshop is geared for those who have written plays, as well as those who have always wanted to try their hand at writing a play. For ages 17 on up.
ACTING
Pursue your passion for theater by immersing yourself in an acting workshop conducted by professional actor Gayle Stahlhuth. Workshops include theater games, movement, improvisation, and scene study. All levels of experience welcomed, for ages 17 on up. No workshop will be the same, so after you've been to one, feel free to return!
ABOUT THE WORKSHOP LEADER
In the early 1980s, Gayle was a pioneer in the artist-in-residence (AIR) movement to put art back into public schools, and is on the AIR rosters for NY, NJ, UT, and WY. For her work, she was selected as one of only two hundred artists from all arts disciplines to be listed in THE DIRECTORY OF COMMUNITY ARTISTS published by the National Endowment for the Arts. She has also conducted playwriting and acting workshops at universities, libraries, on Ute Reservations, for Road Scholars (formerly Elderhostel), and for and through private and public institutions throughout the country, including Theatre for a New Audience and Plays for Living, both in NYC.
When Gayle was the producing artistic director for East Lynne Theater Company, it was the only nonprofit organization in South Jersey that consistently conducted in-school and after-school theater residencies in Cape May County from 2000 through 2020. Locations included Cape May, West Cape May, Middle Township, Lower Township, Whitesboro, North Wildwood, and Ocean City. These cost nothing to the municipalities, because she procured the funding. In 2006, she started ELTC's Summer Theater Workshop, and even directed students in an outside production in 2020 during the pandemic.
As a playwright, Gayle has received commissions from The Smithsonian Institution, Theatreworks/USA and The Illinois and Missouri Humanities Councils, and grants from The New Jersey Humanities Council and The Puffin Foundation. Her plays have been performed at such places as the NYC International Fringe Festival, The Samuel French One-Act Festival, Manhattan Theatre Club, Arvada Center in Denver, the Pennsylvania Stage Company, the Phoenix Theater in Indianapolis, and East Lynne Theater Company in Cape May. Gayle was a popular workshop leader at the now-disbanded North Wildwood Beach Writers' Conference and created an annual two-day playwriting get-away at The Henry Sawyer Inn in Cape May, which is now a private home. She has also worked as a “book doctor” for Off Broadway and regional productions.
In 2019, Gayle was a speaker at a symposium in NYC, sponsored by the nonprofit Dancers Over 40. Her topic here was how to create, perform, and market one-person shows. Aside from shows with a variety of cast sizes, she has written several one-person shows that toured the country, many times procuring bookings through Arthur Shafman International.
